The Bears Croquet Club started in 1984 and was formerly known as the Bear of Rodborough CC.  For the first 32 years of its existence, the club was based at the Bear of Rodborough Hotel.  Development plans at the hotel obliged the club to look for an alternative home, and the club relocated to the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester in 2016.  As well as the club's existing core membership, the club enjoyed considerable interest from the university students, and with encouragement from The Bears, the students started their own club: The Royal Agricultural University Croquet Club.  Both The Bears and the RAUCC share a single full sized court, with the objective of having a second court if demand supports it.

The Bears play mainly the 'Association' rules version of the game, though 'Golf' croquet is also played.  The Bears is a registered club with the sport's governing body, the Croquet Association, as well as being affiliated to the South West Federation of Croquet Clubs.  The Club enters teams in the 'South West Fed' leagues.

Ability levels within the club range from near scratch handicaps to complete beginners.  Club members enter tournaments in the UK and overseas, and most years the club will visit another UK or overseas club for a friendly competition.

During winter months, although croquet is not played, the club holds a monthly social get-together at a local hostelry.
